Two of our Mothers have had recent  devastating nursing home stories.
Joyce's Mother died an appalling death.

JOYCE'S MOTHER:

June 27, 2005
Mother, wearing her little blond wig and glasses, with smile.  Evaluated in March, 2005 as having NO abnormal psychological problems.

June 25, 2005.
Mother, sitting in a tiny wheelchair at a "feeding" table, where she was "force fed" if I was not with her. Notice the height of the table to her nose. She voiced her objection to the food served and the treatment she received there. Her quote to me was "This food isn't fit to eat. After all, I do still have some dignity and should be able to choose what I want to eat." I took her to her room where we had a little refridgerator with sandwiches, juices, water, yogurt, and cheese. Mother was "physically restrained" with a large hump in the chair so that she could not get out to get this by herself. She told me what she wanted to eat, I handed it to her, and she ate it. She was active and cheerful. She even sang me a song.

JULY 1, 2005
After secretly given unauthorized anti-psychotic shot of the drug Prolixin.  Notice mask-like facial expression and eyes.   She suffered loss of ability to swallow, loss of vision, servere dizziness, and uncontrollable muscle contractions to where she shook herself out of bed, even though she grasped the bed rails! (Known as Tardive Dyskinesia)

JULY 11, 2005
Pulse 157, Blood presure 80/49, erratic heart beat, and fasting glucose 194, with no prior history of diabetes.  Rescued and facts known too late.  Died, July 13, 2005.

AWARD INFORMATION

Comfort Care Assurance, a division of Grief Relief Now, Inc., is pleased to announce that Hazen Care Center has again received our  5 Heart Award for outstanding resident care for the second year in a row.  We look forward to finding and praising other good care centers. Hazens administrator, Romaine Tuft, and the staff are truly dedicated to the residents in their care. It has a small home-like environment. It seems more like an extended family residence. (Hazen Care Center, 2520 South Redwood Rd., Salt Lake City, Utah, 84119. Phone 801-972-1050.)

The annual 5 Heart award is now part of our commitment to building a bridge from generation to generation, as we share the message that family values includes protecting the elderly.
